HUTT RIVER BOARD
TREES WANTONLY DESTROYED
The final meeting of the Hutt River Board- for'the; current year was held last evening. {Present: Mr. P. ;S. Hfewer, and Messrs. J.-Mitchell, C: Gostelow, H. E. Leighton, and G.; A. Chapman. Mr. Mitchell again pressed the need of something being done at the "S" bend at Mellmg Bridge. He contended that the shingle bank south of the bridge was causwg the river to be driven' over against the board's own land. The chairman said that a groyne had been authorised north ot ■ the bridge, and when this was built it would help to straighten the bend The Shandon Golf Club again opened the question of the cancellation of its pretent. lease and the making of a new lease, for a much longer term. On the motion ot Mr. Chapman, if was resolved that the proposal be not accepted. ' This being the last meeting of-the board, it was resolved to place on re-c?-,thl board's .appreciation of. the whole i ot its staff both outside and inside The chairman spoke of the excellent work done under difficult circumstances by the outside staff. It was' decided to instruct the board's I employees to report any persons who! throw weeds and rubbish into the water- '• ways, with, a view to prosecuting I The secretary reported that 57 pines had been destroyed by fire, and -also ai groyne at Giesen's. The destruction appeared to be wanton. Mr. Leighton said tiie matter was a most serious one, and I it was decided to.'offer a reward for the conviction of offenders
