BUS AND FERRY TRAFFIC

The monthly meeting of the Eastbomna Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. S. F. Fisher). presided, and there were also present Councillors J F Kockstrow, B. N. Battersby, Margaret Magill, W. F. Hornig, A. Walker, C. A. Reridle, and E. W. Wise.

Permission was granted the Wellingtoa Free Ambulance to hold a street d«y in Eastbourne on Friday, 24th February,----1933.

The secretary of the Post Office notified that the council's request for the installation of a stamp-vending siachinV at "th§ Eastbourne Post.Office would be accede^ to. • 0 Support was accorded to the Kaiapof Borough Council's resolution calling o4 the Government to effect a compulsor f 1 reduction in bank interest rates.

• It was decided to support Petone's protest against the proposals in the Municipal Corporations Bill for the compulsory, amalgamation of boroughs.

The sanitary inspector reported that the last case o£ ordinary infectious disease in the borough had occurred over seven months ago.

On the recommendation of the Financa Committee it was decided to grant £5 5a to the Christmas Cheer Fund of thf Eastern Harbour Citizens' Belief Cods mittee.

Traffic returns for November, wit^k figures for November last year in parent theses, were presented as follows:—T.S.S« Muritai: Passengers carried, 17,823" (19,278); round trips, 37 (40); distance steamed, 555 miles (600); oil fuel used, 23 tons (24). S.S. Cobar: Passengers carried, 13,993 (13,263); round trips, 140 (131);. distance steamed, 2100 miles (1965); coal used; 37 tons (57). ' The Buses during the month' ran 15,120 miles and used 1664 gallons of benzine.

Dealing with revenue from the bus department the Town Clerk (Mr. C. L. Bishop) reported that as a result of the unfavourable week-ends, the revenue was adversely affected and the total for the month was approximately. £150 lower than the corresponding month last yeax. The trading expenditure for the same month was £100 lower. To the end o£ November, the eight months of the financial year showed a decline of revenue of £1450, but against this, expenditure had been reduced by £1250.

In the ferry department, traffic revenue for the month was £130 lower than that for November last year, making the total falling off for the eight months £730. The expenditure for the same period was £950 lower than last year. Taking the ferry and bus departments together, the net result to date was the same as last year, and this under existing conditions wai satisfactory.
