INTERCOLLEGE MATCH

WANGANUI START WELL

After Wellington College had pegged along slowly for the greater part of the (lay, some bright batting was produced by the opening pair for the Wanganui Collegiate School during the final 45 minutea' play of the first day in the annual cricket match between the first elevens of the two schools. The- pitch and outfield at ,the college ground were fast, but some deliveries kept low, and the ball had to be watched carefully all the time. Wellington's innings closed.at about 5 p.m. for .197 runs, the tail-end batsmen providing little opposition to the bowling of Dean and Jaekman/ .Sauriders was the most successful scorer for the local team, and, in comparison with the other batsmen, gave a free display. Lees alsvi scored at a fairly bvisk rate. The ben of the JVanganui bowlers was Dean,.Jhe

captain of the side, and there were 14 maidens in the 24.2 overs he sent down. Jackman, who turned the* ball slightly both ways, troubled the batsmen mainly because of his steady length, and half, of his 36 overs were maidens. The fieldin;; of the visitors was not up to the standard later reached by Wellington, but Ortou gave a fine display of wicketkeeping, the only "extra" being a wide.

Rutledge and Harding commenced Wa.ng'anui's innings at 5.15' p.m. and brought a wide range of strokes into play in | scoring at a brisk rate. Harding, a lefthander, was particularly attractive and scored numerous boundaries, mainly on the leg side, reaching 55 in 40 minutes. Details:— : ' • WELLINGTON COLLEGE. First Innings.
