TRUST BOARD MEETS

The twentieth annual meeting of the Wellington Catholic Education Trust Board was held on Thursday. His Grace Archbishop O'Shea presided, and there were present the JRight Rev. Honsignor Connolly, V.F., Ecv. Father Mahouy, S.M., Bey. Dr. Mcßae, Bey. rather Xlilligan. Messrs. J. J. L. Burke, J. G. Koache, J. Stratford, J. Fagan, L. Carroll, and P. D. Hoskins.

The members, .through his Grace Archbishop ..O'Shea, welcomed Rev. Father Mabcmy, S.JL, and congratulated him on his recovery, from a serious illness, with their best wishes for a speedy return to his normal health.

■The annual report presented disclosed a deficiency of £443 in the ordinary revenue account for the j'ear, ■which is attributed to the prevailing depression. Next year's report, it was stated, would, reflect the effect of the recent legislation in regard to the reduction of interest. It is estimated that the annual revenue from interest on the board's securities would be reduced by £180.

During the year two bequests worn received by the board from the late Miss Margaret Kent (£200) and the late Mr. John Forbes (£2O). These two bequests bring the total number of bequests since the inauguration of the;board to seventeen, approximating, with donations, the sum of £12,000. The receipts for the year in the ordinary revenue account, excluding the bequests, which are credited to capital fund,, totalled £2388, the main items being the Sunday penny collection £967, interest from investments £915, annual schools' social by the combined "Wellington parishes £140, St. Patrick's concert £122, property account £65, special annual church collection £105, donations £73 (£52 of which was donated by his Grace Archbishop Kedwood).

The expenditure totalled £2385, the principal items being teachers' salaries £220 i, maintenance expenses £354, insuraucej interest, etc. £192, administration expenses £Sl.

The Sunday penny, collection for the year, £967, was £76 below the amount collected the previous year.

The aggregate total of the penny collection since the inauguration of the board is £15,817. The year .was most successful in regaTd to the examinations conducted by the Government inspectors. One hundred and thirty pupils were presented for the proficiency examination. Of this number, 126 secured passes, whilst the remaining four received competency certificates.

Twelve primary schools are under the jurisdiction of the-board, and the number of Bupils on- the roll at the end of the year was 1800, 915 boys and 895 girls taught by a staff of nine Marist Brothers and 31 Sisters of Mercy and six" Sisters of. the Sacred Heart. ■ ■

The capital ftmfl-of the board is £24,008, and the, aggregate totals of the principal • items' of revenue are:— Boxing Day. picnic and special church collections, £,2082; St. Patrick's Day celebrations, £3004;-annual schools' social, £2887; interest from investments,- £8249; penny collections, .£15,817; donations, bequests, etc.. £12,000. His Grace Archbishop O'Shea, in moving the adoption of the report, expiessed'his pleasure at the.sjiceess of the ■ year's/results"- in spite of the depression and paid a tribute-to the work of the /officers and- members of.-' the hoard.' The Eight Rev. Monsignor Connolly, in seconding the'motion.; also added his meed of praise to- the work of the members .of the board. " '
