UPPER HUTT BOROUGH
The fortnightly meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough1 Council was held last night The Mayor (Mr. A. J. McCurdy) presided, and there were also present Councillors J. 1. Hazelwood; T. R. Jameson, A. Howell, J. Blcwman, and G. H. Guthrie. The Lands/and Survey Department notified that a warrant had been issued vesting the control of the Upper Hutt blockhouse reserve in the council i'or another term of five years.
Permission was granted the Akatarawa Relief Workers' Union for the use o£ the movable stage belonging to jtfaidstone I ark. The stage is wanted for wrestling. The Upper Hutt R.S.A. and the local Red Cross Association sought permission to hold a street sale of roses on 11th November. As the council has a standing resolution not to allow more than one street sale a month and a sale in aid of a children's Christmas fund had been authorised for 12th November, a sub-committee was set up, consisting of the Mayor and Councillors Blewman and Guthrie to try to make an amicable arrangemept between the people 'concerned. Four ratepayers and residents of the borough wrote asking for a reduction in the price hawkers' licences, and that the issue ■of licences be restricted. It was decided that the licences, which at present cost £1 and £2 per annum, should in future be subject to a 75 per cent, rebate if taken out by a resident of the borough, and if payment is prompt. The sanjtary inspector reported that during the fortnight ended 27th October, one suspected;1 case of diphtheria was dealt with. ; *
