M.C.C. AT PERTH
ENGLISHMEN BATTING
jOPENING OF SECOND MATCH
PATAUDI AGAIN SHINES
Dnited Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. PERTH, 27th October. Winning the toss, ESgland took first strike in the cricket match with a combined team, and on a perfect wicket 359 runs were scored for the loss of ,bnljthree wickets. To this total Suteliffe contributed 169 and Pataudi 129. The attendance was estimated at 11,000, with the gate takings totalling £883. The opening batsmen were Leyland and Sutcliffe, but they were separated in the second over of the day, the lefthander falling Ibw to MeCabe.
Pataudi joined Sutcliffe and this pair playing carefully, carried the score beyond the century mark. There-was not much sting in'the bowling, which was changed frequently, Bradman, Halcombe, McCabe, JJEartin, and Evana all being tried. When the luncheon adjournment was taken the score was 138 for one wicket, Suteliffe and Pataudi each being unbeaten with 78 and 54 respectively.
After the interval the play generally was slow, although, it was relieved by the artistic strokes of Patauc£ as well as by smart fielding, especially on the part of Bradman, -whose returns were marvellous. Although solid and slow, Sutclifie was attractive, making strokes all around the wicket. His scoro of 169, made in 235 minutes, included a 6 and sixteen 4's. ' ...
Pataudi, strong on the leg side, gave another fine display, using his wrists in making most of his strokes without any apparent effort. His century, which occupied three hours, included eleven 4's. Hammond's display was marked by powerful defensive strokes, but at times the batsman went halfway down the pitch to meet the slow deliveries. His footwork was beautiful to watch. Ames was not long enough at the crease before stumps were drawn to give an indication of his batting qualities. Of the bowlers, MeCabe was the best. The batsmen treated him with great respect, but they pasted the West Australian bowlers. The fielding was-ex-cellent, particularly that by Bradman and other visiting players in the combined team. • Details:— . . :
