NINETY MILE BEACH

FIRE IN SPEED CAR j

THEORIES OF EXPERTS

SYDNEY, 27th. October. In further evidence for the defence^in the libel action brought by Norman ("Wizard") Smith against "Smith's Weekly" in regard to comments on the Ninety Mile Beach speed tests, Donald Harkness, designer and builder of the "Enterprise" car, submitted theories concerning, the cause of the fire in Mr. Smith's car, but said that the only conclusion, he had formed was that some foreign substance had caused it. A. fire could be deliberately caused with a pet-rol-soaked rag, and with the engine running there would be no difficulty in picking up a spark and igniting the rag ; . .■• j Norman Josephson, a consulting engineer, said that it was not possible to cause a fire in the manner suggested.by the plaintiff. Witness expressed the I opinion that s. fire.could be caused by loosening a clip of the petrol supply pipe, allowing' petrol to ooze out slowly and ignite' by a spark from one of I the plugs.
