DENTAL CLINICS

COMMITTEE'S SUGGESTION

Disapproval of the recommendation of the National Expenditure Commission that the local dental clinic committees should be asked to provide £100 per annum toward the cost of the service was expressed by Mr. J. A. Nash (Government, Palmerston) in the House of Eepresentatives last night. He said that the work carried on by the dental clinics was most important and the extra cost would be an intolerable burden on the school committees. :

Mr. Nash said that twelve months ago the Government decided that the local committees should contribute £30 yearly toward the cost of the service, and this had been a difficult matter for the school committees. Some of the committees had made a small charge on the children, and in one school 199 children had to go without treatment owing to the fact that their parents could not afford the fee. The Commission recommended that the contribution from the local committees should bo increased by £70, making £100 in all. He did not think that the House would agree to this proposal at the present time. It would place an intolerable burden on the school committees.
