ATTACK RESENTED

MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE

CARTOON IN NEWSPAPER

There was a large attendance at a meeting of ±he Farmers' Union at Tauranga on Saturday afternoon, when, following a discussion on unemployment matters, the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, Minister of Agriculture, delivered an address, states the Tauranga correspondent of the "'Auckland Star." He took exception to statements'that had Veen made concerning him in the paper "Farming First," in connection with a cartoon dealing with foot-and-mouth disease, in ono corner of which it was stated: "The Department of Agriculture intends taking the responsibility of tho introduction of foot-and;mouth disease." Mr. Macmillan also pointed out the following wording ac the bottom of the cartoon: '.'The Minister of Agriculture: 'It i 3 better to have an ambulance at the bottom of tho clifl than a fence at the top. I am the ambulance. "

Mr. Macmillan pointed out that the inverted comma made it appear that the words within the quotations were his. He strenuously denied having made such a statement.

The Minister also referred to the application for an additional cold storage licence in Auckland, and combated certain statements made in this connection when he asked dairy factory suppliers for their opinion on the question of granting a licence.-

•Mr. Macmillan then stated that he was going to resign from membership of the Farmers' Union, Auckland province, out by "Farming First." However, he would not sever his connection with the unipn, but would join another branch in the Dominion.

Mr. Stevens moved that the editor in question be asked to apologise to Mr. Macmillan. Mr. Campion seconded. An amendment was moved by Mr. W. Carleton, "That this meeting resents the attacks made by 'Farming First' on the Minister of Agriculture." This was seconded'by Mr. 0. MeNaughton and carried.
