COTTON SPINNING
SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTE COMPROMISE ACHIEVED CBrltlsh Official Wireless.) BUGBY, 24th October. The dispute in. the spinning section of the cotton industry was settled, as already announced, during the weekend, the terms providing for a wages reduction of Is 64d in the £1 and restoration of the 48-hour week. Further negotiations are now being undertaken on. means of securing the maximum output. A conciliation committee is to be set up to include representatives of both sides, independent members, and an independent chairman. The terms of the agreement represent a compromise achieved largely through the efforts of Mr. F. W. Leggett, the Labour Ministry's conciliation officer, who brought the recent weaving dispute to a successful conclusion. The agreement, it is claimed, will secure higher protection for the employer and in consequence better wages for the worker despite the cut, while new conciliation machinery should ensure an avoidance, of further disputes.
