LISTENING IN TO 2YA
(Written for the Tairy Ring.)
lAM afraid'that ■Jimmy . wat thought to be rather an untidy; and dirty Tjoy by his mother. She was always telling him to,'scrape the mud off his boots—;wash hiß hands —and all the other things that mothers seem to want done. .. On| evening he happened to'coma into the house and heard the announcement by 2YA that Aunt Sesame and Uncles John and Jasper were going to the observatory and intended broadcasting wha,t they could see through tha telescope. Aunt fiesame".. announced that-she had rung the observatory and the sky was' clear." ' ; . - Then it got interesting. The aunt and two uncles described what they; were, looking, at. First the ■ moon. Neither air nor water on the moon, nor. flowers, not any .life of any descrijn tion. How funny that would bel Saturn next—a ball with a ring around it. Jimmy could quite imagine that! Nest something that sounded like a "jewel basket"—a lot of different coloured stars. '/Yes," thought Jimmy, "I have noticed that some stars are \ different ' colours from, others." Next something that changed the star from, a point of bright light into a band of colour, like a rainbow— but he couldn't catch the name of the instrument.' It sounded like "spectacles,'' but Jimmy knew that v<w. f" th*. ttamp- : ~.-.* ._ For. about a wees jimmy tried to r« member to scrape his boots, wash hiv hands, and brush his hair! Overhaa^ ing his mother remark to dad that "Jimmy was improving," he went tt». his father and began to make remarks about the moon, and telescopes, never been to an observatory, and so on..Dad looked up from his paper and said: "Oh! That's why. there's-been all the hair-brushing, eh ?" ""Well ..." began Jimmy. ' But his father laughed. "All right, son," he said, "we'll go next.clear Saturday evening. Will that suit?
