PLEA* AND SENTENCES

(Received 21st October, 10 a.m.) LONDON, 20th. October. Ernest Toms, 44, former finance officer, and Arnold Hore,'46, former auditor, in the New Zealand High Commissioner's Office, pleaded guilty, and were sentenced to imprisonment for a year and nine months, respectively, in. the second division. Toms's defalcations amounted to £1850 since 1926; Hore's were £.700. Millions passed intact through Toms's hands. The salaries of each defendant had been cut to £660 a year. They, tried to live on their former scale, and got into difficulties. Both drew money-al-legedly as advances on salary, while simultaneously drawing' the full amount of the latter. Toms made a full confession. -,
