WELLINGTON MEETING GOOD FIELDS CARDED PROSPECTS IN REVIEW Prospects could not be better for a successful outcome to the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting, which opens at Trentham to-morrow and concludes on Monday. The weather has been settled and indications are that it will continue fine. The track is in really excellent galloping order, not too hard, and with a good sole of grass. .' Special trains leave Lambton for the course at regular intervals from 9.55 a.m. Carriages only will" be used on the trains, and a uniform fare of 5s (including admission to -the course) will be charged. The first rac'e'oeacb.Vday^is scheduled to start, at 12.17- pjn. • . " ■ The -prospects are reviewed as follows: GLEN HURDLES HANDICAP. The Glen. Hurdles Handicap contains recent winners in Captain's Gift, Henry of Navarre; and Full Mark, and there is form also among' some of the other acceptors. Henry of Navarre may' not yet be the class of Captain's Gift; but he has proved himself a capable fencer and it will not surprise to find him beating the southerner. Full Mark reads as well as either of them, but it is reported that he is unlikely to be on hand. Among the others, Jayson and Warzone have good chances at their weights. If there is a turn-up it may be provided by the sue- ; cessful 'chaser, Royal Visitor, who indicated'on the flat at Avondale that he has retained his National form. It is not easy, however, to pass by the claims of Henry of Navarre and Captain's Gift. TAITA HANDICAP. The only youngsters in the Taita Handicap who have yet shown true ability are. Dollar Prince, Lady Nan, and Star Artist, the last two of whom also have an engagement in the Wellesley Stakes. Dollar Prince won at Masterton at his only start to- date, and as he did his job well he will carry more confidence on this occasion. If Lady Nan and Star Artist are run here they will provide formidable opposition, especially the latter, whose Avondale Guineas third was a promising performance. Among the fresh blood those who appeal most are the wellreputed Eereatu and Dole. Golden Hair has the breeding, but has failed badly in her two starts ta. date. Favourites may be Star Artist and Dollar Prince. WAINUI HANDICAP. The Wainiii Handicap, .like most open miles at Trentham, offers a tough problem for solution. The topweight, Cricket | Bat, is the class horse in the field, and, with last week's race in him, he should be capable of making a bold bid for the honours. He looks well and has evidently had a lot of work put intb him lately. His tnain opposition may be provided by Mm

NOTES AND COMMENTS

some.time prior, to running second.in the Avondale. Cup last Saturday, and he should, strip even fitter to-morrow. Fast Passage must go well, but may lack a race. Pahu, like Red Heckle a son of. War-plane,-won the race two years ago,^and is in great order at present. On the minimum are two capable of providing surprises—Joie de Val and Cluny. A couple who. are: well in and should go well are Red Heckle and Royal iArtist. WELLESLEY STAKES. Next to the main handicap the race for the Wellesley Stakes will attract the principal interest of the day, and the usual excellent field of ■ youngsters is carded to go to the post. Desert Gold's relative, the flying Princess Doreen, is assured of favouritism, and few who saw her win the Avondale Stakes last; Saturday, will countenance her defeat.. The'Avoridale placefillers, Gipsy Love and Star Artist (if reserved), > will be backed for second dividend, but there ard three colts in the field who should also go well, the Wanganui winner, Midia'n, and the bracketed southern pair, Guarantee and Southdown, both easy, winners at the recent Dunedin Meeting. Quietly, Wait and See, Lady Nan, Senior, Rereatu, and Epigram are others that have the apparent class. Quietly has improved a lot recently, and is capable of a surprise effort. It.looks like Princess •Doreen and Gipsy Love. ' : SHORTS HANDICAP. A useful field of sprinters remains in the Shorts Handicap, and it should be a tight -fight for the honours., Cadland,* View Halloo, and Great Star have had one race-each this season, arid they'have won; it, so that here,is form that it is not pos-^ sible safely to.look beyond.. Cadland and Great Star' have thoroughly proved their! class, and th§y'are likely-to be the publicj selections. View Halloo has the best of; his.sire's pace, but he does hot- always; show to fullest advantage away fronV home, and. for .this reason the other pan* are preferred.;; Tea Trader and Orapai are possibilities' lower down, but their form is notso good as that of. the others mentioned.. ■:Arrow Lad may not yet be quite rea^dy,; and Lord Val will also possibly requirei ihe* race.'.The class looks too solidvfor'tlie:.others..VThe pair who' should take" most beating are Cadland and Great; Star. . ' '; ,- OCTOBER: HACK HANDICAP. <: One of thevday's hardest problems is offered by'vthe October Hack Handicap, the ha.ck.six furlongs..-.The Tiger, is reported'fit, but- he seems to have been well .looked, after by the handicapper. Next, below him are a Riccarton pair, .Hurlingham- arid The • Quorn, who should beat him;' arid Trentham has a formidable -candidate ■' in -;V Normandy, who .has been.'working ■ brilliantly- during the. past week or so: These thrice must make.the main- appeal,-but:they dd not include' all the possibilities; for Woodful," Posy, and Purse are also speedy sorts who may use their advantage iin the weights to some purpose if they can get.-. away smartly.' Hunters Moon arid Copper King have the pace, -but have previously ■ disappointed.If. there .is .a...surprise.itvmay come from Maypay-,or Redtop. Recent form certainly indicates ' Hurlingham arid Normandy. ;
