EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS
The monthly meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. S. F. Fisher) presided, and. there were also present Councillors E. N. Battersby, Margaret Magill, A. Varney, W. F. Hornig, A. Walker, C. A. Reridle, and E. W. Wise. The council approved of the proposal in the Free Ambulance Empowering Bill, enabling it to contribute up to £50 to the ambulance for the coming year. The council's:grant will amount to £25, : No cases of infectious disease were notified in the borough in September. Permits for six buildings to the total value of ,£l3lß were issued in ; September. . ■ Traffic returns for September, with figures for.September, 1931, in parentheses, were presented as follows:— T.S.S. Muritai: Passengers carried, 13,317 (12,377); number of round trips, 30 (35); total distance steamed, 450 miles (525); oil fuel used, 19 tons (21.5). S.S. Cobar: Passengers carried, 12,645 (11,993); number of round trips,' 143 (135); total distance steamed, 2145 miles (2025); coal used, 60 tons (60). During" the mbritti the. buses ■ ran 15,263 miles, and used 1693 gallons of benzine. The Town Clerk (Mr. C. L. Bishop) reported that rates for current year wero coming in steadily, although to the end of September approximately £400 less had been received than for the corresponding period last year. For the six months to the end of September expenditure had been; kept within the proportion of the amount provided for in the estimates, and the expenditure for the full year should be within the total. In the bus department, for the month of September the revenue showed a falling off of £115, as compared with September of last year. This falling off was equivalent to approximately 15 per cent. For the six months to' the end of September the traffic receipts were £1100 below those for the correspond-ing-pe.riod last year. This represented a falling off of over 20 percent, over the period. .For the six months to the end of September trading expenditure had been reduced-by £1000, nearly meeting the fall in revenue. I The ferry department revenue for September was approximately £30 below that for the corresponding month last year, making the total decrease for the sis months £450. As against the fall in revenue, trading expenditure for the period had been reduced by £900, leaving the net result £450 better than for the same period last year; In the omnibus and ferry departments expenditure had been reduced by nearly £2000, and despite the heavy falling off in revenue the combined net result was approximately £400 better than for the corresponding six months last year. . r ■.. ■
