FIRE BOARD'S SOFT ANSWER
Recently a call was received by the fire brigade to a blaze on the outskirts of the city. The fire was actually beyond the city boundary by 600 yards, but the officer in charge accepted the responsibility and the brigade went to work. An account for services rendered was tendered to the Makara County Council, and at to-day's meeting of the Fire Board a reply from the Makara Council was read to the effect that it could not accept liability for the £7 odd expense incurred by the brigade. Members of the board expressed surprise. When fires had occurred at Eastbourne and city engines had gone to the bay there was no question of avoiding responsibility. . AVas the board to instruct its officers to watch a home go up in flames if it happened to be two hundred yards over the boundary asked Mr. Marcus 'Marks. ' The decision would always "have to be left with the officer in charge, said the chairman (Mr. N. W, Nelson). The board decided upon a soft answer merely acknowledging the letter from the Makara County Council, and adding that in the past when such accounts had been presented they had invariably been met. ''
