s COOLER CONDITIONS

Moderate to strong north-westerly to westerly winds are likely to prevail at first north of Greymouth and Kaikoura; but a change to south-westerly winds is advancing from the Soujh; Anyi southerly winds that are experienced later, however, are. not likely to be strong or of long duration. The trough, or line of lowest pressure, of the recent series of depressions crossed the Dominion, yesterday evening and last night, and a change to south-westerly weather- reached as far north as Canterbury. Although' barometors have been rising since then, the change temporarily faded out, and squally northerly winds have continued. The southerly change, however, may be expected to become general -within the next twenty-fonr hours. ; ■ Bain has been almost general, many moderate or fairly heavy falls being \Teported. The rain will be-, of immense benefit, especially as- temperatures Miave remained mild except in the southern half of the South Island-. /The falls reported range from 196- joints ; at. Greym'outh, : 150 points at Arthur's Pass,-90-points at Westport,-to a little over, half-an-inch at Nelson, (Siristchurch, East Cape, and Cape Egmont. ,• :\ / :~ "\ -'■ ■ -. '■ In Auckland yesterday the weather was. overcast with, light showers. A strong northerly breeze there' has now given place to a moderate westerly wind. - Wellington.had very changeable weather yesterday. /The morning; was fine, but by midday- the weather was increasingly threatening. Bain amounting! to 46 points fell in the afternoon and evening. This morning; it was again fine, but by noon rdin. was threatening once more. A dull and mild day in Christehnreh • was • followed by a southerly "buster" at 6 p.m., when heavy rain fejl. This morning, however, the weather was fair again. Dunedin had.overpast . weather yesterday with light rain ana cool temperatures. The rain was heavier during the night.
