FRIGHT AT CROSSING
BUMP INTO A TRAIN
RACEHORSES IN FLOAT
An 'accident fortunately not attended ■with serious results occurred at the Paekakariki railway crossing this morning as the 8.18 o 'clock WellingtonPalmerston North train was drawing into the station.
A float .conveying three Trentham horses to the Otaki course was just about to leoross to the main road ■when the.train was observed approaching. Although the brakes of the float were promptly applied they did not pull the vehicle up quickly enough and it struck the train1, on which the brakes had also been applied. Damage ■was done to the front of the float, but the horses and occupants escaped injury. •■. . • ' The horses were; Gay Court, Araios, and I/ate Jest, who soon settled down again after their fright, apparently iione the worse for their shaking. Two trainers, H. J. Benge and G. £&. Palmer, were also on the float.
