TELEPHONE
"Petone Subscriber" "criticises the charges made for telephones under the new Hutt Valley automatic system. "No person with business^ dealings in the city would tolerate the inconvenience of: continually calling up tolls, and to agree to an increase from the oljf cost of £13 per annum to £18 for the new makes such cost prohibitive to the smaller man, whereas if the price was within reasonable reach theMiumber of subscribers would soon, convert this department into a veritable gold mine and 'revenue-producer." Is it.fair to make an increase of 2s 6d weekly for an eight-hour"' service, i.e., 8.30 a.m. to -4.30 p.m. (business hours), while a private telephone for the full 24 hours is £10 per annum?" The correspondent, suggests that the charges will lead to loss: of subscribers, especially as permission to convert business into private' connections is refused; and .that it would be better busi-' ness to charge bedrock' rentals.
