SOME HIGH READINGS

The anti-cyclone which moved on to fthe Dominion last Friday, and which las held sway eyer since, has been an Exceedingly intense one. At 9 a.m. on Saturday various places in the South Island recorded barometric readings up to and over 30.70 inches. The highest leading "was 30,74 inches, Akaroa and pDunedin each sharing tho honour of achieving the maximum. The pressure an Wellington at the same time was 80.65 inches.

Invariably in August, for some obscure reason, New Zealand has a period of very high barometric pressure, and the highest readings ever experienced in. thei Dominion have been recorded in that month. On 13th August, 1889, . barometers at Lincoln recorded a pressure of 31.059 inches, which is the highest reading 'recorded in New Zealand since meteorological records began. On the same day the barometric reading was 30.92 inches at Te Aroha, 30.9 at Eotorua, and 30.886 at Wellington. Another high Wellington reading Svas 30.863 inches on Bth August, 1906.
