RAILWAY. ACCOUNTANTS
. The completeness'of the work of the accountancy branch of the New Zealand Railways Department was referred to in eulogistic terms by the Assistant General Manager (MriG.H. Maekley) at the annual reunion, of-the chief accountant 's branch: of; the : railways oa' Saturday night. : ' : \x ".' ■'' V ■•:■': -'.' ;
i Mr. Mackley said^that; Mr.^H.^Valentine and ;his ; staff had the management .down;' During: the sur~ vey of brand lines, .;a •tremendous amount of figures and! details/had been called for. and had been, ably supplied^ "If ..the public; who are as much, concerned as the Tail ways are, were aware of the amount of information collected and examined before action is taken, they would be in no doubt," said Mr. Maekley, "as to the correctness of the Eailwtay Board's decisions."
He then referred to the East-Coast line where, as a result of the board's visit, a: plebiscite recently taken, by the suppliers of the largest dairy in the district had decided by a large majority to 'give their business to the railways. Had.the board's information, not been complete and conclusive, such a decision could not have been reached.
"I regard myself as a unit of the service, and am always prepared to meet, on a common footing, every member of the staff," said Mr. Mackley in. referring to the cordial relations existing between the management and the staff. "The compliments paid by prominent business' men have been very flattering and. encouraging regarding the manner in which members of the Department go about their work. If that spirit continues to prevail, we need have no fear of getting where we want to in the not-too distant , future. " '
