WIN FOR CANTERBURY

BULLER LACK FINISH

(By Telegraph.—Press i Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, 10th September.

Canterbury beat Buller by. thirteen to nil in a hard game for the Eanfurly Shield to-day. A crowd of 17,500, including several hundreds of West Coast excursionists, watched the game.

The first half was a grim forward struggle in which the advantage lay plainly with the Buller forwards. Again and again they hammered their way to the Canterbury line, but they. - lacked the finish to press home the advantage with a scoring movement. The only score in the 'first hal£ was '" a neaf field goal by Roberts. In the second half Canterbury definitely took and held the initiative. The forwards, who had held 'the-.-game tight in the first half, began to dominate the loose rushes, and toward the end the backs threw the ball about effectively.1 Buller defended resolutely and stood the fast pace of the game well, but never looked like winning, the side' failing always to produce any thrusting tactics which might, have led to a score.. Twice early in the second spell Hart was crowded on the side line when making a ,bold bid for a score. The first try came when King, taking the hall from a lineout, shook off two taeklers- and was instantly racing for the full back. He

short punted over Graham's head, gathered the ball again, and scored a magnificent try. Roberts missed a hard shot. Canterbury 7, Buller nil. Canterbury's next opportunity came when Innes intercepted a pass and sent Oliver and Brown away. Oliver ran to the full-back, who tackled him, but in the meanwhile Brown was away with the ball, and he scored at the corner. Roberts missed the kick. Canterbury 10, Buller nil.. King scored the last try of the match a few minutes later. Hazelhurst received from a scrum and passed to Manchester, and the big forward showed good speed. He was tackled, but escaped, and sent the ball to King, who beat a tackier and scored. Roberts's kick failed, and a minute later the game ended with the score: Canterbury 13, Buller nil.
