MR. A. ALEXANDER
Mr. Alfred Alexander, who for many1 years, until his retirement in 1920* was superintendent of mails in tha General Post Office at Wellington, died: yesterday.
Mr.' Alexander was' well known in. shipping and commercial circles. During the trying years of the war he. devoted, all his energies and wide postal knowledge to the overcoming of difficulties imposed by the conditions .then prevails ing- :;Pi his- retirement, tie! lived with; his daughter, Mrs. B. Porteous, at 107, Waipaparoad, Hataitai.
Born at Pieton .72. years ago, Mr.; Alexander's early years were spent in. farming, sawmilling, and clearing activities under pioneer conditions in | Marlborough Sounds: When in rcminisj cent mood he had many interesting tales to, tell—spme in,light and some in tragic vein—concerning life in those almost forgotten days when settlements in Marlborough Sounds ■wer» scattered and sparsely populated, and; ■the only means of communication--was by sailing orr rowing boat. It was this vigorous life _ which laid the foundation for a strong physique and a sturdy, independent, though kindly, character, which remained with' him. 'throughout his life. , -.'■ ._ The late Mr, Alexander's wife diei in 1906. He is survived by a son, Kenneth, of the Public Trust Office, Wellington, and three daughters, Mrs. Ruby -Porteous, 107, Waipapa joadj Hataitai, Mrs. Doris Howe, 60, .Tafcman. street, and Mrs. Lora Sheppard 6 Bridge street. ''
