WEATHER IMPROVING

SHOULD BE MILDER

The Tecent small, but very disturbing, depression has passed away, although barometers are still relatively .low to the north-east of Now "Zealand. Ah intenso anticyclone has moved on to- the South Island, and this inorning its centre was near the -Chatham Islands, where barometers were as high as 30.52 inches. Strong southerly winds and cold and squally weather prevailed yesterday in and L north of Cook Strait. Rain fell in many parts, but with the exception of some heavy falls along the- East Coast and in the Auckland peninsula, < totals wore generally light or moderate. Cape Palliscr reports 141 points falling yesterday, Castlepoint 123, and East Cape 88. The South Island, on-the'other hand, has experienced mainly fair to fine weather, with light to moderate' and variable winds. This morning nortberlies were prevailing over the southern half of the South Island, and an improvement had also taken place over the North Island, although showers and unsettled weather were still in evidence about Cook Strait and to the north of Auckland.

Auckland had a squally westerly wind yesterday and. last night, with frequent showers. In Wellington the weather was cold and' squally with a strong southerly wind. Very little further rain fell, however, only one point being recorded at Kelburii and two points at Lower Hutt. Both Christchureh and Duncdin had fine and sunny weather yesterday with very little wind. Cliristchurch had nine degrees of frost last night.

Moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly winds may still be expected in and north of Cook Strait. Elsewhere northerlies will prevail and gradually freshen. Showers or misty rain are likely at first in eastern and far northern districts of .the North Island, but the' weather as a whole should improve, and in other parts be fine. Later 011 showers will develop in western and far southern districts of the South Island. Temperatures will become milder.
