CHEAPER TENNIS
COURTS AT MIRAMAR
IN LINE WITH THE TIMES
Because -of the depression, Mr. C. G. Swinburne (chairman) suggested at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association last evening that the hire of the courts at Miramar should be made so. cheap that the demand for them would be trebled. One aspect of the matter, he said, was that some players could not afford club fees, but could hire courts at a cheap rate. It was decided to make the hire of firstgrade grass courts 3s an hour, and sec-ond-grade grass and hard courts-2s an hour. The previous charges were 4s and 3s. To make the public tennis-minded, and. so improve the'finances of the association? said Mr. H. R. Baigent, it was necessary to provide good inter-club matches. Some of the mter-club matches last season were unequal because of the presence of outstanding players. The public would want to see keen contests. He suggested that certain players should be withdrawn from the mter-elub matches, and they could play m a tournament. The clubs would be more even, and better games would result. It was pointed out that clubs affected by the withdrawal of players woiild oppose the. suggestion. One way out of the difficulty, a member suggested, would be for the players in the special tournament to be able to win points in it for the club. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to incorporate in a circular to club officials, inviting them to a conference on 23rd September, the suggestion that a number of players (say 10) should be withdrawn from inter-club matches to play in provincial ranking matches. A better suggestion, it was remarked, might be made at the meeting of club officials. It-was decided that tennis balls for the inter-club matches would again be supplied by the association. j It was decided to ask the Management Committee of the Hutt .Valley Sub-Asso-ciation to meet the Management Committee of the Wellington Lawn Teniiis-*Asso-ciation to discuss tennis matters generally. The following committees were appointed:—Construction and maintenance, Messrs. C. G. Swinburne and H. R. Baigent; grounds, Messrs. A. W. Cooper and W. W. Stirling; inter-club, Messrs. J. J. Gribble,' R. AY. Lander, and C. K. H. Donnell; publicity, Messrs. R. V. Thornton, W. W. Stirling, J. -L. MeDuff; finance, Messrs. H. R. Baigent and H. N. Burns; postponement committee; Mr. Burns. Mr. Swiuburne was reappointed chairman, and Mr. .T." L. McDuff was appointed deputy chairman. The following were appointed delegates to the. New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association:—Messrs. Swinburne, Baigent, Burns, MeDuff. apt! Stirling.
