Another entertaining programme wal provided at last evening's session ot •the Wellington Competitions in th» Town Hall and met with, the approval of a critical audience. Errol Wood, 87 points 1 Dorothy Daniels, 86 points 2 Miss Edgar, the judge, said that the class, on the whole, was so good that she would have liked to mention a number of others. I Nola Hyde (Brooklyn), SB. points ...... 1 The Judge said that the ' winner possessed powers of expression, vocally and physically, of a high order. He created distinct atmospheres. The second prize-winner had a splendid resonant voice ■- and a flne poetical sense. NEGRO SPIRITUAL, ladies, any voice; own • selection. Miss Phyllis Liddell, Carterton ("Somebody's Knocking at Your Door"), IT4 points \ Miss Kathleen Chappie, Christchurch ("I've - Been Out in the Storm"), 172 points ... .■ f A marked weakness^on the part of most was a lack of the rhythm or lilt peculiar to negro spirituals, said Mr. Slater. The winner's effort was a magnificent one. Miss Chappie also gave a great performance. ._. ... . JUVENILE CHOIR, 20 to 30 voices, two-part song accompanied and two-part song unaccompanied. Mr. : Slater, commended the winners on their wonderful stability of pitch. Northland showed fine interpretative ability, but their intonation was poor. Both this class and the duet for boys and girls provided excellent characterisation, and the narking was very close, said the judge, Mr. W. Slater.
