STILL LEVEL

SENIOR A LEADERS

CLOSE FINISH EXPECTED

With the competitions in all grades nearing the end the championship tables are of increasing interest. Last Saturday's games in the senior A grade did not alter the positions of the leaders, Karori and Wellington, and it was a coincidence that 'both the important matches were drawn. There is a postponement of all senior A games to-day on account of the absence of players on the country tour, and the issue will therefore be in doubt for some time yet. If both Karori and Wellington win their games on Saturday next the final match between them; which will actually be a play-off for the championship, will be decidedly worth watching.

Interest in Country Tour. Tho Wellington touring team apparently met, with strong opposition in the first : three; matches. The game against Wairarapa on Monday ended in a draw, and the win over Bush Union on Tuesday was only by a margin of one goal.. Dannpvirke defeated the touring combination by 2 goals to 1 on Wednesday. However, judging from exchanges it is evident that the team has created a good deal of public interest, and has succeeded in fostering closer relations between Wellington and the country associations. In these two ways the tour-has done a lot of good, fully justifying the small expenditure involved, and also giving members of the team valuablo experience. The final match of the trip is to be played against Wanganui at Wanganui this; afternoon, and the Wellington players will return homo to-morrow. Ladies' Senior A Championship. ( For the second year in -succession College Old Girls have- won the ladies' senior A championship, going through the season with only ono defeat. Last season they were unbeaten. A postponed match played between Training College and University on Thursday finalised the competition although it had no bearing on the championship. University sprang a surprise by winning 2-1. The other three grades have still somo _ distance to go. The following tables include the results of Saturday's games:—

Australian Tour. The Sydney "Eeferee" speaks highly of the display given by the New Zealanders in the match with Metropolitan, which ended in a draw. "Both New. Zealand and Metropolitan played the game as it should be played, and a large crowd was visibly impressed with the exhibition. The All Blacks of hockey set a high standard for their initial game in Sydney, and Metropolitan can. consider themselves lucky to hold the visitors to a four-all draw. The New Zealand forwards are •full of dash and guilo, and set many little traps for unwary backs. The visitors 'reached Sydney with an . unbeaten record 'in northern New South Wales and Queensland, and with the astounding goal average of 49 goals for, to 3 against. Forty-nine goals in five matches is a record to be proud of." Since then the New Zealanders have continued- their unbeaten record, with decisivo wins over the Central-Western representatives, Federal Capital, and South Australia. To-day's Test match [at Sydney promises to be one of the hardest games of tho tour, with the possible exception of that against New South Wales, always a hard proposition. L
