"In. discussing' the Southern Maori by-election just before he left New Zealand for Ottawa," said Mr. Young, "the Bight Hon. Mr. Coates, as leader of the Reform Party, expressed his regret at the sad death of Mr. Makitanara, and he said to me that •it was his sincere wish that the pact entered into prior to tho General Election between the United Party under the leadership of the Right Hon. Mr. Forbes and himself as leader of the Reform Party should be faithfully kept by all friends of the Reform Party.

Southern Maori electorate- was concerned, he hoped that Mr. Ned Parata, who had been chosen by Mr. Forbes as the official Coalition candidate, and who had his, Mr. Coates's approval, would be elected. .Mr.. Coates authorised mo to take such steps as I might think fit to convey to his friends among the South Island Maori electors his message of greetings and his request; that they stand firmly by the Coalition Government and send to Parliament the gentleman who had been selected by Mr. Forbes and approved by him as the .official candidate, namely, Mr. Ned Parata.
"This is in compliance with the pact entered into when the Coalition Government was formed, and I- now appeal to South Island_ Maori friends to stand by our chief in honouring the wishes of the leaders of the Coalition." THE FIELD FOR TO-MORROW. The candidates for the by-election are -Messrs. W. T. I. Parata (official Coalition), E. T. Tirikatene (Ind., Ratana Party), J. Beaton (Inch, Coalitionist), P. MacDonaia (Ind.), and T. K. Bragg (Ind., Reform).- Though Mr. W. Mihaka has stood down at the last moment in favour of the Government candidate, his name must go forward, as he was officially nominated;
