Against Oriental at the Petone Recreation Ground, Petone could do nothing wrong in the second spell. Backs and forwards combined in good fashion, and try followed try in quick succession. Just as surely as Petone could do nothing wrong Oriental could do nothing right. Their defence was very weak—all except that of Ritchie, the full-back—and their attacking movements. did not get them very far. Oriental failed to use the wind to advantage in the first spell, .'but they managed to keep Petone in check. The suburban team had their "picnic" in the second spell.
Early in the game Davies put Oriental on attack by a dash to the. corner, but he lost possession of the ball. Petone pressed, and Selwood kicked a penalty goal. Wilkinson picked up the ball in his own twenty-five and dashed "(down the field. The ball was transferred to Ramsay, who scored: Some time afterwards, after Petone had hammered on Oriental's line, Carr made a good opening, and the passing movement ended in Valk's scoring. During the spell Peterson retired hurt and Pickard went out' to the wing, but Peterson was able to resume in the second spell. The score at half-time was: Petone 6, Oriental 3.
Early in the second'spell Pickard, scored. Fulford kicked a penalty goal for Oriental, and Huxtable scored near the corner after a bright passing rush. Selwood converted from a difficult angle: At the end of a short passing rush Lambourne fell over the line arid scored. Peterson made a good run, but lost possession of the ball, and Carr dived at it and scored. Selwood converted. Eeid obtained a try by diving at the ball. Selwood converted. Huxtable scored, and then Valk. Selwood converted "Valk's try. Spence scored ' a try that was converted by Selwood. Peterson scored' and Selwood converted. Pickard came down the-field'with'the-ball at his toe and scored. Selwood converted; Amid much local jubilation the game ended with the score: Petone 50. Oriental 6. Mr. G. Eathbon was the referee.
