HARRIERS

IN SOLID TRAINING

BY "PAPERCHASEN"

CHAMPIONSHIP PROSPECTS

TANADEES CUP RACE

Bunning well above anticipated form, A. Lawer, off-the 4mih oOsec marketed the field of twenty-nine home in the Scottish Club's Tanadecs Cup race, the only event to be decided locally last Saturday. This victory was reminiscent of A. Wood's run in tho 1931 Ballantyiie1 Cup race, in that once the winner '' hit the front' 'he gained confidence and surpassed himself. However, the honours,of the event restcd:with'-A L Stevens, L .who returned the exceptionally last time of 31niin 3sec, or 33sec better than he registered over tho same course—one -Jap of the ' Vosseller^-a month ago, Overtsfking taan'-aftnr mail from tho;outset, Stevens had the'pace on, and over tho last mile and a'^ialf his pace was a revelation.-,-On: this showing he should;proye a tqiigher^propositiOTi:;for;Bayne and. Proper'in: the provincial championship ;at^ Masterton than he was in the Dome Cup contest. Another veteran who is regaining old form is F. Silver, who finished 50sec behind Stevens on. Saturday after very little training during the previous few weeks. >■ , ; All the other local packs indulged in solid graining runs, averaging six to seven; miles each. Brooklyn. Thirty-three members of the Brooklyn Club were present at. Kaiwarra last week. This. '' muster," while being very satisfactory, shows that there are still a few members.^ho/are not "pulling ai mucKSweifih't'>;"as-thoy should-be fof thev.club/CBrooklyn's. yeteraiis-: .while stiU-capable ofMfine/'perfdrmanebs in open company, cannot be'expected to uphold the^ club traditions:'; without the support of the youiigeiv members. _.Pyeif the trail,; laid; by Tannerrand Gittings,;this Blp^pack'showedup well, their; faster; elubmates failing to oyer-. takevthem. v'Boberts has been showing a distinct return ■ to; form, and is expected to be included in the "A" team. ■ UnfortunateSy. for the club, Davies is still indisposed and is unable to'produce true form. Coombs, McFarlane, and B. O. Pederscn will- bo close rivals for sixth place in the club team. Scottish. 1 A. Lawer is the second member of the Lawer family, to have won the Tanadees Cup, a brother of this year's winner being successful in 1929. Lawer showed a great improvement' in this race, and has evidently been training h»rd. He ran well throughout, and finished, fairly fresh. Badland, fifth, and Cox, seventh, were the two outstanding middle handicap men. Both are young runners who should develop into class harriers. , M. Violich, third place and second fastest time, runs with determination and should go close to securing a place in the Wellington team. Fleming, in finishing second, showed that with training he would be a fine handicap runner. An enforced | spell from, training seemed to have beneficial results for Buchanan, who registered fourth fastest time. He was somewhat lucky in defeating D. Woodley, who lost a shoe and much valuable time at a • critical stage. Woodley should secure "A" team Honours. "■■■: and Prince as usual finish-ed-within, seconds of each other. Both ..shoiild.'.be.:. capable "B?,' team, candidates. Hivon and Parktiouso both ran well below; form, whilst ' a strained ankle prevented Foster from giving of his best. Next Saturday's championship is being, keenly awaited by members and should provide some excellent finishes. Stevens, Violich, Silver, and Hivon. seem assured of "A" team honours, whilst Olifent, Woodley, Foster, Parkhouse, Buchanan, and Ellis should have a spirited tussle for the two remaining places.' ";'..■■ :- Hutt Valley. Together with ten runners from the Christian ' Youths • Movement Club, twenty-five members of the Hutt "Valley Club followed a seven-mile trail selected by King; Clarke, and Welsh. A new member in Pcareo*, (Hutt Valley) was successful in the 440 yds run-in, whilst Fuller (C.V.M.) also showed a surprising turn of speed in the final dash. E. Bichardson, former Calliope Club runner, has joined, the Valley pack. The club is confident of fielding a strong combination at Masterton, and with Bayne, Smith, and Kent expects to make its presence felt in the championship event.. ~,: Olympic' , .■■ ■■. :\. : ■Five, miles of fast going, including a strenuous climb up Mount Hawkins, was the task set by ;P:- Wilson and E. Lovatt for their clubmates, only twenty .of whom were" present" at; Island Bay last .week. The run-in over 300 yards saw-'D. Sullivan, C/;Caihpbell, and W. W.att finish in that order. ■: jTlie- colts increased their >run to two milei; and a half, and showed improvement'in their efforts, j.'Bezer was again "successful in, the :150yd run-in. Although Lovatt hasgiyen outstanding displays against his elubmates, P. Wilson's successful comeback should make Lovatt'g task of securing the club championship title-a very difficult one. Wellington..; .';'■. Seven milea of fairly solid running found the majority of the Wellington Club members in tip-top condition. An excellent muster, nearing the forty mark, followed L. Watson and M. Cooke_ from Scatoun, the runners being split into throe packs. • S. McKinnon, who has been doing some serious training,-hopes to be successful in defending his club title. On last year's performances MeKinnon should be able to find his way into the Wellington provincial team. Presbyterian. As the guests of Mr. A. Martin, Karori, thirty members of the Presbyterian .Club attended the usual weekly outing. S. Dick and M. Stephenson, who were in charge of the paper, led tho threo. packs over seven miles of hill and road. AH runners voted it an excellent preparation for the club championship next Saturday. In the run-in W. Scott led the field home, .followed by H. Cowan and E. Moore. J. Long and L. Poole are expected to figure prominently in tho inaugural championship event.

The Canterbury-Otago Kugby match is. being played at Duncdin to-day. Otago -will incet Auckland at Dunedin next. Saturday, and Canterbury will play matches'with South Canterbury on Wednesday at Tiaiaru and on Saturday at. Christehurch. , • . ;
