"charge- of- a !-motor-car, in-' Taranaki street, Frederick Robert Marriott, a manufacturer's'agent, aged' 49; Svas fined !£ls. He wais seen by • Constables Bourke and Tomlinson .walking down .Taranaki street in a manner which indicated that he -was somewhat intoxicated. Crossing the road, the. defendant got into a motor-car and was attempting to start it when he was arrested.'.-'.. ;:. ■ ,■;■■ ■ Counsel for the defendant put in a certificate- from Dr. White, who examined Marriott shortly after he - was arrested, stating-that the defendant, was far from being drunk. . He' thought it was unfortunate that the defendant had fallen into the hands of the police, but the liquor-he had had on an empty, stomach immediately before being arrested might have temporarily affected ;him to such an extent that it might then: have been safer ior him not to drive a-car. ■ ■'•.'.- In reply to si: charge of being found unlawfully in', possession ■of six cups and saucers, valued,at 4s 9d,, the property of the New Zealand Eailways Department, Louis Gestro first. said he knew nothing about them and then that he might have picked up one "or two in sections he had cleared at various times. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called, upon within twelve months.
