JTOUNG MAN'S DOWNFALL

In the Magistrate's Court to-day, John.Thomas Hartley, a clerk, aged 26, Admitted-'that by representing, in one case, that he came from a well-known city tailor,.and in others that he was 'tin the staff of the Union Sfeani iShip -Company, he had obtained four overcoats,: valued at £19. Bs, and a pair of skates from various city firms.

"This young man is an accountant," said' Detective-Sergeant Revell/t'o Mr. E. Page, S.M; "Up to a couple of years ago' he.followed quite, useful occupations', and he. comes from a respectable faniilyi Latterly .he has been drinking henvily, and he is getting cjuife a list'against himself; No doubt drink.- is the cause of theso offences."

The accused said lie had pleaded :giiilty becanso ho wanted the .whole matter' cleared up. He had been nnable < to obtain work, and had become stranded in Wellington, Ho had tnought it was better to stay here and i'end for himself rather than go to Dunedin, whero his people lived, because they were not in very good circumstances.. Unfortunately he had ■commenced to drink, and all his trouble lad been caused through that.

EomarHng that Hartley had been convicted of theft, breach of his proTjation, and. obtaining credit by fraud, fho Magistrate sentenced him to twelve months' imprisonment.
