BACK AT WORK
NORT&EEN MTNEES
MEN GLAD TO RESUME
(By Telegraph.)' (Special to "The Evening Post.") . AUCKLAND, 12th July. Over 1000 coal miners went back to work in the mines to-day. Thus ended the stoppage of over five weeks that cost the parties to the dispute and the country generally a very large sum of money. ■ ■ Although a normal day's output was not obtained from the mines owing to factors necessarily associated with a return to work after a lengthy period of idleness, approximately 3000 tons of coal was railed into Huntly during the evening, and should be in Auckland to-morrow. The output from the Taupiri coalmine's colliery at Eotowaro alone was 700 tons, which is only 100 or 200 tons qhort of a normal working day's production. Among the contributing delays was the necessity for taking a cavil, or ballot, for working places in the mines, which it is customary to hold once every three months. All tho men are glad to resume work". Ten days must elapse, however, before any wages are paid, as the miners re- ] ceive their remuneration fortnightly, I and the next pay day will be Friday, 22nd July. Even then they will only receive a week's wages, as it is customary for the coal companies to hold back the first week's pay after a man's engagement. It will be impossible for the men to receive a full fortnight's pay, therefore, until nearly a mouth.
