APPLEDORE'S VICTORY
WELL-MERITED SUCCESS
(From "Vedette.") SYDNEY, 6th July. Appledore saved the situation at Fleniington on Saturday for the New Zealanders. He won well in the maiden hurdle event, for he gave Prince Don a start from the last fence and beat, him home Prince Don had just before won an open event, over a jnile .and a. quarter at Caulfield. . ■ .:•■ Appledore was well ridden by I. Tucker, who did not hesitate to take him through on the rails. The race was wortb £210 to Appledore's joint-owners, and he was supported from double figures to practically half his original quote in the ring, and extensively on the totalisator .Landmark and-Make-Upboth failed badly in the major event, beating only three horses home, and finishing practically together. They did not look possibilities at any stage, and the critics stated that they looked hke horses in need of a spell instead of strenuous racing. Well-known Wellingtonians who were present at the National were Messrs W Higgins and C. Boyle.
