HARRIERS

SCOTTISH FORM

IN BALLANTYNE CUP

EAST WEEK'S RUNS

. The principal event on the local harrier programme last. Saturday was the Scottish e.lub'sßallantyne Cup handicap race rim over one lap of the "Vosseler Shield : course. It was a great race. Without exaggeration it can be considered one of the most closely contested, and interesting.club races decided in Wellington. Once the field settled down it was impossible to forecast the final result, the first and fifteenth runners" being" separated "byonly 150. yards for the greater part of the journey. The winner, D. S. Woodley, ran a well-judged arid >determined race from the Imin 42sec .Vmark, .and finished strongly. The most outstanding feature of'the day's sport was A. L. Stevens's time for the cdurse, 31min 3Gsec. This effort indicates that, the ex-provincial champion is rapidly reaching peak form, and should prove hard to beat in inter-club events. The remainder of the clubs confined themselves to five or six-mile outings wherein the runners in most cases were allowed to make their own pace. With, the Packs. Thirty-two members, of the Brooklyn Club were present at Wadestown 'as the guests of Mr. Barclay, senr. L. Todd and W. Tanner, who were in charge of the paper, decided to select the old trail that is usually followed at this particular outing. The damp weather was an incentive 'to fast travelling with the result that the fast pack overfook the medium and slow packs at ;Khandallah. The runners were then allowed to set their own pace. Some of the seasoned members elected to stago an informal run-in over the* last threo miles.. ,$..-, Dayies led. .them home, G. Prosser followiiig close behind. Through.: out the run Bibby^arid Boberts- were always well :tp the "front, should be able togive'a good account of them-, selves in the near future. -•• . Scottish. . .-■ • Woodley's run in the Ballantyne Cup was full of merit, and his.victory was a popular one. Woodley has always joecn a decided asset to the club, and this season should prove no exception, Violich, second both in place and time, improves with every race, and seems- a certainty for the A team. ■ '.' Parkliouse, third in place and time, ran his best race this season, and. produced a spirited finishing dash to.head' Prince' right,- on the tape. This should be a lesson for the latter. '"■-, I\ B. Silver ran well above expecta.tionsj and with further training .will'be showing the majority the way home. Tunbridge, Crisp, and Badland all registered good performances, especially the first-named, who.has improved rapidly since tho Novice Handicap. Olifcnt and i'oster have yet to attain the form which made them strong candidates for the A team last season. Stevens's effort speaks for itself.: Ho is displaying much better form than at this time; last jr ear. ■ The ascent of the hill certainly proved the advantages to be gained by training. Fleming and Dillon, for instance, were unable to sustain the paco after having led the field over the hill. A pleasing feature was the attendance of several of the vice-presidents and supporters at tho run. This encouragement is just as necessary to the success of a club as tho piesencc of active memb'crs. 'Varsity. A:..good, .muster, of 19 memhers'took part in. a five-mile run from Island Bay. The four packs were well strung out at the finish so no mn in was held. ' ■ - Tho new members, Wansborough and Oln or, wei c out. D Cairns and Coup showed pace in the fast medium pack. Presbyterian. ':'. Tlio run from Seatoun by the Presbyterian Club was marked by an excellent attendance of thirty members, who followed a six mile trail laid by A. Heudeison and A. Harris. Consider£ble impiovemcnt was noticed in tho packs, although the slippery conditions made the pace somewhat slower than usual. On account of the fast pack's ■losing the trail the run-in was not held. Hutt Valley. In-,view of to-day's race the traillayers selected seven.and a half miles of flat going for. the, thirty members of the Hutt Valley Club -who participated m last deck's run. A mn-in over the last 400 jards saw T. Garrctt defeat M. Patterson and B. Dudley for honouis. Wellington. As a "pipe opener" for the Dome Cup the Wellington packs tried a light six-miles of varied going around Kelbum and Brooklyn. The trail-layers, Hcthorington and Thorlpy, had originally chosen a solid twelve-mile course out toKarori, but on realising this the club captain wisely decided to curtail tlus considerably. f C. McConchie had iust a little" more m reseive than M. Cooke in the runin- held over three-quarters of a mile, the final dash resulting in the former winning by a narrow margin. B. O 'Brion was third. Olympic. Hataitai -was the -\enue of the Olympic Harriers. The attendance(was.again on the small side, only twenty-one runners taking part. Mountjoy and Dalies led then club mates o^ ci seven miles of fairly "firm going, mostly situated along tho Town Bolt. The run-in Was dispensed with owing to the runners, being fairly well strung oat. i 1 : The Port Road Race. , : Following on his third in the Edmdnd Cup and second in the Kcnnett . Cup, E. C. Biown (Civil Semce) eclipsed his prewous peitounances by defeating a field of ninety one lunncis, including the ledoubtable .T. G. Barnes, in record time in tho Port Chalmci;s-Duncdin road lace lust week His time for the distance (about eight miles), 3!)min oosec, was lmm 9sec better than the previous lecord. The teams event lesultod'iii a! fuither success foi .the Civil Service Club, Anglican and Caieisham being] second and third respectn eh-. ? , Benson Shield. ; • The fust of this season's series of! races for the Benson Shield saw the Wanganui Club secure a formidable 54----point load over their rivals, Masterton, held over a 6J-milo course at Wanganui. The race resolved itself into a very keen struggle with the local team only asserting its superiority over the last three-quarters of a mile. The individual winner, G. Johnston, .won comfortably by 120 yards, from his club-mates, C. Weller and K. Johnston, who: deadheated for second. L. Hack, fourth, was first Masterton man home.
