NEW STATISTICIAN
MR. J. W. BUTCHER
The appointment was announced-to-day by the Public Service' Commissioner of Mr.' James ;'W. Butcher as Government Statistician in succession to Mr. Malcolm Fraser, 0.8. E., who was recently appointed TJuder-Sccrotary of Internal Affairs.
Mr. Butcher was first appointed to a eadetship7 in the statistical branch of the Registrar-General's Department on 17th February, 1906. On Ist May, 1915, he was promoted to the position of chief compiler at the Government Statistician's Office, and on the Ist April, 1929, to the'position of AssistantGovernment Statistician.
Mr. Butcher, is' an active trampcr, and has been a member of the Tarania Tramping Club since its formation, He was for many years club captain of the Karori Hockey Club, of which body he is still a meniber of tho committee.
