v The . and Exporters-Com-mittees, of the Cpuneitof the "Wellington.-; Chamber - of- Commerce 'reported as follows to a meeting of tho council last evening:—"The subject of Customs duties revision was before the council recently in regard to relationship between the diminishing of Customs revenue receipts and increases over recent years in the rates of Customs duties. Some, instances have already been brought to notice of. articles whose importation has dropped drastically coincident with large increases in rates of Customs duty: A. :nuinber" of trade associations have been communicated with for further instances, and replies are being awaited. Meantime, various inquiries are being made towards, ascertainment of information and specific instances which will' assist the committees' in' further consideration of this matter. In ■ discussion mention lias been made of the 9-40tha surtax upon scheduled duties.having an influence in this." -.•:•'.. Mr. M. J-. C. MeCaul'said that the' Customs Department, was. nqt able to supply the sub-committee- with the infbrmation .but- that information would probably be given 'later. On the motion of Mr. M. M. Heinemann it was agreed that a letter be sent to the Department with reference to the 940ths surtax, and asking the Government;that> if. possible, the surtax be removed. ■
