MR. W. J. UDY
A member of one of the pioneer families of tho district, Mr. Walter James Udy, died at his residence, Britannia .street, Petone, on Tuesday in his 67th year. The late Mr. Tidy's (father .arrived at: Petone in the ship Roxburgh in February, 1840, and Mr. Udy was born at Greytown, where about 40 years ago .he married Miss Annio Jndd, whose people Were equally well known as early settlers in the Wairampa, haying arrived in New Zealand-in 1840. The late Mr. Udy was1 •farming at Mataroa. and at Hukanui, after which, in 1901, ho came to Petone, wihere he carried on the business of a iainber merchant, his yard being on the .corner of ,the Hutt. road and Udy 'street, which was named after his lather.; In 1917 he sold the business, and he lived in retirement at Petone up to the i time of his death, prior to /which 'he was not in good health. In his younger days he was a keen footballer, ;and later he became a bowler, winning^ in this game, a championship :at Petoae. . , , . . ■ ■ , . , : '.
All lis life he was an active member of ¥&e> Methodist Church. He leaves a widow and a family of six—Mrs. H. Miller , (Lower Hutt) s Mrs. (J.
