MR. COATES'S REJOINDER
-■In a rejoinder to Mr. McKeen's remarks this afternoon, Mr. Coates maintained that Mr. Stewart personally drafted the whole of the policy portion of- his Financial Statements—after consulting his colleagues, of course. The work was done by Mr, Stewart personally, and his constant aim was to make the financial position as clear as possible to the average reader. Mr. Stewart 'often rearranged, the figures submitted by the Department with a view to making them more clear. .Mr. Coates declared that'l the. policy part of the Financial Statement was prepared in Mr. Stewart's own handwriting and typed, in his. own office; the personal touch was always very evident.
■ "It is typical of Mr. MeKeen that when he is bowled out he side-steps," Miv, Coates remarked in>referenco to Mr. MeKeen's remarks regarding his (Mr. Coates's) actions in respect to the small farm plan. The Galatea Estate had- nothing.to .do.with .the small farm scheme, which was an unemployment Telief scheme. The Minister of Lands (Mr. Bansom) had had to'modify his Galatea proposals, as had been done with other proposals, on account of financial resources...'...' .
