TILLS ROBBED

PROBATION GRANTED TO BOY

The robbing of shop tills and the con-, version of a motor-car resulted in Patrick Stanislaus Blake appearing before Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday on three charges of stealing sums of money amounting to £4 2s, and one of converting a motor-car to his own use. The accused, who was stated by his counsel to have been influenced and led by an older boy, pleaded guilty to all charges. Sub-Inspector Ward said that the accused was concerned with two other boys, who had been going round shops and stealing money from the tills when the attendants were absent. The other boys had appeared before the Court last Friday, and had been admitted to three years' probation.

In addition to the charges before the Court, said Mr. Ward, the accused on 24th and 25th April, in company with some boys younger than himself, had been concerned with three charges of unlawful conversion of motor-cars and two of theft. The. other offenders, whose ages were 14 and 16, 'had been dealt with at the Children's Court, and the accused would appear there on Saturday to be finally dealt with. The police report said that the accused was untruthful when interviewed, and unless he got some stricter supervision he would develop into a thief later on.

Counsel for the accused said there was no suggestion that the accused was the ringleader, and he should therefore be entitled to the same treatment as the boys who had appeared before the Court on Friday. The accused, had a job to go to, and it was the general opinion of those who worked with him that lie had been influenced and led by another boy. - The Magistrate admitted the accused to probation for a period of three years, and ordered him to make restitution of £119s, together with Ss 6d Court costs, at a rate to be fixed by the Probation Officer.
