-PARIS, 10th May. . M. Lebrun was elected President of Prance by 633 ;votes, against his opponent 's 163 votes.

'President Lebrun was invested with the seals of office by M. Tardieu aB President of the Council.

Rumours of further attempted assassinations caused the Palace of Versailles to.be heavily guarded during the Presidential election^ Cavalry patrolled the great forest and infantrywith machine-guns surrounded the .Palace. The historic red and gold Salle de Congress was crowded with a distinguished social assembly. Peeling ran high following the I election, Senators^Borret and Louis Bien coming to blows, and also Deputies' Grolett'e and Bonrgauc, tHe latter twice soundly smacking his rival's .face.

M. Lebrun, as. President of the National Assembly, ascended the crepedraped Presidential box and solemnly announced the purpose of the assembly. Members stood in two minutes' silence as a tribute to the late M. Doumer.

The voting occupied two hours. M. Faure, a Socialist, received; 114 votes, .and M. Painleye, «despite his withdrawal, 12, which was a tribute from his admirers. M. Cachin, a Comr munist, received eight votes, while the others were variously distributed-
