A Sydney message advises that a basket of preserved eggs carried by a Chines© was found, to contain < opium. Customs officers thoroughly searched the basket and found 20 tins of opium at the bottom

During a fire in. Sydney a lady asked a constable to search for Her baby's shoe. The constable complied, and during the search the fire 'burned merrily, but the shoe could not be found.

Thoroughbred horses at an annual yearling sale in Victoria on Monday were sold for what was described as the price, of a song. r

The annual General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church' of New ■ South Wales is being held in Sydney. ~ Two men travelled on a twin from Lismore in dog boxesnot more than a yard square. They were fined for travelling on the railways : without paying their fares.. The men said that they regarded the police cell as luxurious compared with the dog boxes. A Tasmanian Treasury official has been charged at the Hobart Police Court with having disposed of Treasury stamps. He had 30 years'- service to bis credit. ~ ,
