JADE ON THE FLAT
BETTER OVER HURDLES
Horses that race on the flat like jades sometimes prove themselves different horses altogether when they arc put over the obstacles. Time after time that has been proved.
. It is to be Loped, for his owner's sake, that this remark will apply to the future career of Bon Eve. A fine-looking chestnut, he has been a gay deceiver on the flat, even if he did win a race or two. He raced on the Hat the firet day of the recent Egmont Meeting, and after being handy early, he faded right out, and actually finished last. Any qualms the owner might have had about trying him out over hurdles must have been dissipated after this last exhibition, so he was made acquainted with the battens in public, although he had schooled fairly well in private. PROMISING. Bon Eve's debut as a budding National winner was in the hurdle race last Thursday at Haweta; and: the fact that there was only support for him to the extent of £13 spoke for itself. Yet on Lia display he ought to have had a good deal more money invested on him, for he went a'very good race indeed.' His rider did not handle him very judiciously, unless he',wanted to try him right out for future events, for he rushed him up to the leaders on the bend going out of the .straight, being five horses out from the rails on that run, which, of course, meant that he covered lengths more ground than the other competitors. Bon Eve was running with the leader, Cruachan, along the back, and until three furlongs from home, .when he began to peter out. Which was not to ( be wondered at. Bon Eve finally finished sixth, but it was a nne performance under difficulties, for the chestnut was asked to do the impossible. But the rider must have secured a good line on his mount's chance in his next hurdle race, which will be ,the Rata Hack Hurdles at AVanganui to-morrow. On last weeks showing it would seem that i° n o c may s° clos6 to: .picking up a race at the meeting. . .
GAY 'COURTS NEXT RACE
.Gay Court, who opened his winnin" career by running away, with a maiden race at Wanganui in the spring, left yesterday, to fulfil engagements at Wanganui to-morrow and on Saturday. ■ His race to-morrow is in the hack sprint,.in which he will,be opposed by several good horses of their class. '
