NORTHERN COAL PARLEYS

HIKURANGI V. WAIKATO

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, This Day A serious view is taken by Mr A Robinson, president of the Northern Miners' Union, of the refusal of the Hikurangi coal miners to return to work unless the company withdraws notices # of dismissal. He said that since returning from Hikurangi he had endeavoured to persuade the president of the Coal Owners' Association to proceed with negotiations for a new agreement as far as the Waikato miners are concerned.' The owners, however, said they were not prepared to reopen negotiations until "the Hikurangi men resumed. .

"We have again appealed to the Hikurangi men to return to work," said Mr. Bobinson, "and -we have pointed put that in the event of their remaining out, collective bargaining •will cease in the industry. Delegates who took part in the suspended conference with the owners in Auckland have returned to their branches. They will call meetings this week and will recommend that appeals be made'to the Hikurangi men to resume work, andthus leave , the road clear for negotiations for a new agreement." Meanwhile the owners have been asked to continue the present agreement beyond its expiration date, 16th May, but nothing definite has been decided.
