SYDNEY, This Day. . Mr. E. Hirst, chairman and general manager of the British General Electric Company, with headquarters in Sydney, who has just arrived from New Zealand, says: "The depression has not affected New Zealand as seriously as it has some other countries, for from outside appearances everyone seems to be^ happy and wellI dressed. The grumbling about conditions in New Zealand has been caused through lack of ability to compare conditions there with the conditions among other nations and peoples rather than the actual1 hardships that one meets with in everyday life. - :
"One of the most astounding' features I experienced on the trip was the spirit of tenacity shown by the pepple of Hastings and Napier in their rebuilding operations."
