RECORD FRUIT SEASON

THE UNEMPLOYED

NELSON, 9th May.

The last direct shipment of export fruit this season from Nelson will be made this week by the Tairoa, which is to take 44,000

There are still 13,000 cases required if Nelson is to reach the million mark this season, which definitely closes on 12th May. ' Last year's record of 815,000 has been eclipsed this year with the total standing at 987,000. and a week to go. Mr. and Mrs. C. Homan, well-known residents of Wakefield, celebrated their golden wedding to-day. They were marlied in Haveloek, and afterwards resided in the Marlborough district for about '25 years, Mr. Homan being employed in goldmining and wagon-driving. Later, he joined the Post and Telegraph staff, and cams to Nelson. He was transferred to Murchison as foreman linesman, and lived there until the big earthquake, after which he took up residence in Wakefield. There are nine children, living in various parts of Nelson district and the Coast.

A meeting of Kelson's unemployed men was held in the institute rooms on Saturday night, about 70 out o£ a total of 320 vegistei-ed at the labour bureau attending. The meeting was well conducted, orderly, and good-humoured. A free discussion took place on many matters affecting relief workers. It was decided that the unemployed should have direct representation on the Nelson Unemployed Relief Committee. The chairman and committee resigned, and a new chairman and a committee representing the relief gangs in different, parts of the city were elected
