HEAVYWEIGHT BOXER RETURNS

.Looking none the worse for his gruelung bout with Ambrose Palmer, the heavyweight, boxing champion of Australia, for the heavy-weight championship of the Australasia and the Beauchamp Belt, held in Sydney on 2nd May, Alan Campbell, the New Zealand heavy-weight/champion, returned to the Dominion to-day by the Zealandia from Sydney. ■ Campbell was beaten, the referee stopping the fight iv the' ninth round. The bout was arranged by the National .Sporting Club of Australasia, and was held in the, Sydney Stadium. In an interview: with a "Post" representative, Campbell. offered no excuse for his defeat, except that he did not have sufficient training after" arriving in Sydney; ~. He only had seven days-training before entering the ring, the rest of his time being occupied in attending functions, etc., arranged in his honour. * "I think I won the.first three -rounds, but after that Palmer .just pushed me any- | where," he :s.aid. "I never had the strength to keep going after the ninth round." On his'arrival in Sydney by the Zealandia Campbell received his first welcome from an aeroplane. While the vessel was jin the harbour a machine flew overhead and dropped' two floral boxing gloves. The first dropped down the funnel of the steamer, but, the second, with a note of welcome attached,' landed "on the deck. Campbell was well received in Australia, and was the guest at a reception arranged by the National Sporting Club; of which Earl Beauchamp, who presented the belt for the fight, is president. ■.-.."' Campbelll has a-contract with Mr. H. D. Mclntosh, ; the Australian promoter, for two more fights in Sydney. A Japanese named Tony Gora is mentioned as one of his opponents.' Eay Nicol, of Invereargill, a challenger /or the heavy-weight title oi: New Zealand, may also be one of Campbell's opponents in the near future.
