(Received 9'th May, 1 p.m.)
LONDON, Bth May. It is now estimated that between thirty and thirty-five are dead. The rescuers, numbering, fifty, .including M. Herriot, who resides in the neighbourhood, ■ were digging in an attempt to reach" the entombed victims, when a second landslide caused a tremendous fall of earth, injuring tho captain of the fire brigade. The slide stopped just short of M. Herriot's party. M. Herriot, who is Mayor of Lyons, was urged to return owing to his political responsibilities and the possibility, of his becoming Premier.' He replied: If others are endangered, I must stay,* and continued digging imperturbably." The danger of further subsidences eventually, led to the temporary abandonment of the effort to extricate th» bodies. . •'"
All neighbouring houses are bein* evacuated. . ,
