NEW PRESIDENT

MR. J. PEARCE LUKE

llr. J. Pearee Luke was last evening elected president of .the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

In proposing the election of Mr. Luke, Mr. C. J. B. Norwood, the outgoing president, said the country was passing through a very difficult time, and the Chamber would be fortunate in having at its head a man of such ability as its new president, and one who would do his utmost in the general interests. •■■•/■ y In x returning thanks, Mr. Luke-said that the country had reached such a stage in its development that in addition to what were called the primary industries, and those engaged in them the.business community had a right to expect due recognition of the services which it rendered to the community. That remark, he added, did not apply to any particular section of the community; / On the motion of Mr_ Luke, Mr. A. D. Kerr was elected vice-president of the, Chamber. Mr. Sydney' Jacobs' was appointed, to represent the Chamber-as a member of the Council of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of the British Umpire j and Mr. E. E. Bender' was appointed to represent the Chamber on the advisory committee :to the Commercial Department of the Wellington Technical. College. ;
