A BOROUGH RESERVE

MORE SPORTS ACCOMMODATION

Among the many borough reserves in Lower Hutt is an area adjacent to Trafalgar street of some five or,six acres.

Last year, by the use of unemployed labour, this reserve was levelled and grassed, and is now available for sports purposes. •■--.;■ The' Parks. Committee last evening proposed that it should be offered to the Hockey Association for three years at a total rental of £60, of which g 4O should be paid the first year and klti in each of the two : following years. Councillor Ginger said this would enable the council to have money immediatoly for the provision of dressing and lavatory accommodation. The area would make two full-sued hockey grounds, or one full association footbalKground and one small one.

Councillor Campbell ma'do a plea that Association football should have tho area. . Hockey, he said, had live grounds, including one on the Hutt Park,' and Association ■ only one. Councillor Patrick opposed letting the ground for more than one year, and was supported by the Mayor and others.

It was finally agreed that the Hockey Club be offered the ground for the use of ladies only for one year at a re&tal of £20.

Dealing with the question of building dressing accommodation, the Mayor desired that th© work should be done by unemployed labour, stating, that the men wished to have work at their own trades rather than pick and shovel work. ] Other Councillors, however, were opposed to this course, and it was decided to call for tenders for the work, the accepting of a tender being left in ' the hands of the chairmen, of-..-the Works, Bylaws, and Eesdrves Committees.

It is hoped to. obtain revenue from the ground in summer from cricket.
