A "Coin" Afternoon.

The lounge of the V.M.C.A. Building was used for a successful "coin tea" arranged by the members of. the Ladies' Auxiliary. A cordial welcomo was extended to all by the."president, Mrs. C. Falconer. A delightful programme of musical and elocutionary items was given, those Contributing being Mesdames Hindle, ,Downer, Phiilipps, and Misses Kersley' and Finlay (songs), Misses Mason (pianoforte duets), Mrs. Castles (recitation), and Miss V. Hill ('cello solos).. . The accompanists were Mrs. .V. M. Edgar and Misses Mason and Finlay. Afternoon tea was served. Mrs. Falconer thanked all for their genorous assistance, and a very successful function concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. Free Kindergartens. The "Evening Post" subscription list in connection with the -Wellington Free Kindergarten is still open; to receive donations. It will greatly assist in the future organisation of the work if donations are "forwarded as soon as possible. . All those who have so kindly taken collecting cards aie reminded that they must be returned this week, unless arrangements have been made to hold them until a later date. . ; '■ ■ An Enjoyable Evening. > ■ An enjoyable evening was spent in the Hataitai School recently, when the Old-Students' Association of the school held its first dance of the season. Those responsible for the success of the function were Misses J. Highet, N. ■Williams, Messrs. Avery, Cathie, Osborne, Benouf, Searle, and Telford. They were assisted by Mr. H. Wilson and his orchestra. During the evening there were two Monte Carlo dances, the winners of. which, were Miss J. Highet and Mr. H. Rickman, j&d Miss Lamberg and Mr. Elder. Among those present were Mr. L. H. Searie (president), Mr. andiMrs. A. A. Kirk, Miss J. Coombs, and Miss I.'Highet (vicepresidents of the association). Many other guests were present, and the party was a great success. • Residential Nursery. The Hon. Dr. 1 Collins presidefl over a large attendance of the executive committee of the Residential Nursery, Owen street. The matron's report stated that the month had been a busy •one and the health of the children had been good. A hearty vote of thauks was passed to Lady Beauchamp for her generous donation of a. ton of coke, and to' Island Bay Circle for £6. The treasurer reported the following donations received, for which the committee expressed thanks: Hon. J. G. Coates, £1 is; Miss Nathan, £1 Is; Mrs. Atkinson, £1. The various branches of the Residential Nursery reported progress at the recent meeting of the Management Committee, at which Mrs. F. Porter .presided. Khandallah andj.Wadestown branches each held a garden party, and Island Bay Circle a bridge afternoon, all proving a success, both, socially and financially.- "The committee heartily thank the following donors for gifts of goods: Hon. Dr. Collins, Messrs. Niehol, Bear, Irvine, Embury, McWhirter, Chambers; Mesdames Beales, Bear, Irvine, Peterson, Porter, Taylor, Misses Bennett, Fannin, Sheppard, Sullivan, and also., members of Berhampore branch and Mesdames Peterson and Reid for sewing done for. the nursery. A "Mothers' Club " The annual meeting of the Wellington South Free Kindergarten Mothers' Club was held recently at the kindergarten, Mrs. Sims, of the Ngaio Kindergarten, presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet showed a very successful year'B work, the sum raised reaching £.66 16s Id. Thanks were expressed- to all .those who had helped during the year with the children's party,, card afternoons,, and the"garden sale. Mrs. Dowsett gave a,n interesting on the life of Helen Keller, and *was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Thanks were also given to Mrs. Sims. and the retiring officers and committee. Officers elected for the ensuing' year were .as follows:—President, Mrs. Blenkinsop; secretary, Mrs. Nicholson; treasurer, Mrs. Sherring; . committee, Miesdames Hollick, Cunningham, Pole, Luff, Maude, Christesen, Webb, and Hewitt. • . • Lyceum Club. . A particularly interesting afternoon was spent recently by about eighty members and friends of the Wellington Lyceum Club, when; they paid a visit to the fine garden and native bush bef longing to Mr. O,'Connor, Wadestown. The guests were received by Mr. O'Connor and his mother and sister, and had a delightful "wander" round the garden and bush, where they were shown many rare plants, and received some interesting information. Later they were received indoors, and. after a delicious afternoon tea, were shown a number of beautiful curios, and artistic old furniture, china, etc., all of which was much admired, and the visitors were deeply appreciative of all they saw. Sincere thanks were given to Mr. O'Connor and Mrs. and Miss O'Connor, for their delightful hospitality. ■ . Invitations Issued. The Wellington Victoria League has issued invitations for its annual "book tea," which will be held at the Pioneor Club as usual. The literature collected will be given to back-block settlers, the unemployed, invalids, lighthouse people, and those in the isolated islands belonging to Now Zealand. Invitations have been issued for another of the series of dances held at Scots' College in aid of the., pavilion fund.
